想要知道一個人是不是值得栽培，首要觀察他待人處世的品德，有沒有別人由衷讚賞敬佩的地方，再來才是他個人的才能是不是有處事能力。如果兩方面都具備，是最難能可貴的真人才；其次是，雖然沒有完備的個人才能，卻有令人讚嘆敬佩的品德，這樣的人透過培養還是可以託付；再次之，如果個人處事能力很強，但品德卻是令人無法認同，那麼這樣的人雖然才能洋溢卻很難任用。
To observe a person, whether that person has virtues is the primary concern and whether he has capability is only secondary. Those having both virtues and capability are most worthy. Next are those who have virtues without capability; their virtues can still be put to good use. Next are those who have capability without virtues; their capability is nonetheless difficult to use.
